Go Ceramic for Your Next Non-Stick Pan
Even if you’ve invested in some incredible multi-ply and cast iron pans, there’s still a time and place for non-stick, so get one you’ll love.
The Carrara Ceramic Fry Pan from ZWILLING is available in three sizes starting under $50, and pairs a beautiful white non-stick ceramic coating with an aluminum core for even cooking. While hand washing is (always) recommended, the Carrara is dishwasher safe, and its rivetless ergonomic handle is one of the most comfortable I’ve ever used.
Solo Stove Bonfire: A Fire Pit for Every Backyard
Good news! You can take that DIY backyard fire pit you were never actually going to build off your to-do list and just buy a Solo Stove.
The Solo Stove Bonfire series takes the brand’s years of experience perfecting portable camping stoves and applies it to a larger format, (much less) portable set of fire pits. Available in three sizes weighing in from 15-45 pounds, ultralight these are not, and if you want to take them camping, to the beach, or to a friend’s place, which you should, you’ll most likely be driving them there.
The stainless steel construction of the Bonfire includes few removable parts, no electronics, and no controls. The airflow system facilitated by the vent holes at the top and bottom of the pit keep the fire burning faster, hotter, cleaner, and more efficiently, encouraging more complete combustion. At the same time, the Bonfire also keeps the fired centered, keeps more heat off the ground, and pulls away spent ash. Long story short: this is a safer, better fire with far less smoke.
If you can start a fire, you can use the Solo Stove Bonfire, and the two larger sizes will easily accommodate standard fire logs.
… but where there’s not smoke, there’s another fire. The BioLite FirePit is in many ways the digital, grill equivalent of the Bonfire. With adjustable fire intensity, and the ability to burn wood or charcoal with the space for 4 standard firewood logs, the FirePit lets you burn it (and cook it) your way. Best of all, both sides of the Pit are mesh, giving you an unobstructed view of your flames whether you’re cooking or just looking. The FirePit weighs in somewhere between the two smaller sizes of the Solo Stove Bonfire, and its form factor makes it easier to carry and more city balcony friendly.
Ready For Your First Cast Iron Pan? Get Lodge.
There’s a time and a place for non-stick pans, but if you’re ready to break out of your Teflon shell, cast iron is the place to start, and Lodge’s is impulse priced.
Founded in Tennessee more than 120 years ago and still family owned and operated, Lodge knows a thing or two about cast iron. Their most ubiquitous and essential item, whether you’re in front of the stove or in front of the campfire, is their cast iron skillet. Weighty, pre-seasoned, and much easier to clean than you think, the Lodge skillet is available in a variety of diameters, configurations, and editions, but always at an eminently affordable price point.
A Lodge cast iron skillet is the perfect item to broaden your cooking skills, or to pair with your sous-vide for a finishing sear, and makes a great gift for an aspiring chef. Be sure to grab a silicone handle grip and chain mail scrubber (seriously) while you’re shopping.
Dyson left other vacuum manufacturers in the dust (get it?) years ago, and their latest achievement, the handheld Dyson V10, is such a leap forward that it convinced them to end development of their corded lineup.
The V10 takes everything that made its predecessors the best vacuums ever and improves upon them, with better ergonomics, more clear indicators for things like battery life, and a very welcome much larger bin. The ridiculously powerful motor in the V10 picks up far more than earlier iterations in the line (which I’ve used extensively) in the same amount of vacuuming, and small things like improved handling make it a joy to use.
The Absolute package of the V10 packs in every possible attachment, and they’re definitely worth it, though anyone priced out of the V10 should consider a V8 or V6, which are still incredible values backed up by Dyson’s excellent customer service.
The Best Air Purifier is also a Fan
Dyson has reigned over the vacuum cleaner and room fan spaces for years, so making the best air purifier was a natural extension.
The Dyson Pure Cool DP04 combines the best smart air purifier with an excellent room fan to not only clean your air, but circulate the newly cleaned air around the room, while keeping you cool in the process. (Most) air purifiers are stationary, which results in obvious limits on their effectiveness unless some other device like a ceiling fan is regularly moving air around the room, but the Pure cool is self-sufficient.
As you’d expect, the Pure Cool includes HEPA technology, with a filter that seems to last forever. The display is fully dimmable, operation is quiet, and the optional smartphone and Alexa controls are well-executed and welcome.
The smaller and less expensive TP04 option is perfect for bedrooms.
Turn Your Utensil Drawer Upside Down and Refill It with Dreamfarm
With a reddot design award-winning tool for every task, Dreamfarm is the cure for the common spatula.
Need a heat-resistant, dishwasher safe spoon that sits up on its own, turns into a ladle, can also be used as a scraper, and has built-in measurement lines? A measuring scoop that self-levels? Or maybe you just want to cut your pizza with scissors, or find a garlic press that actually works.
Dreamfarm loves to tackle the little problems that come with the stagnant designs of ubiquitous tools, and until you try their products, you won’t realize how much you hated your old tongs.
Almost 10 years after its introduction, the Breville One Touch Electric Tea Kettle is still an awe-inspiring appliance.
As its name implies, the One Touch makes perfect tea every time with the press of a button. Whether you’re working with loose leaf tea or bags (you should be using loose leaf), the One Touch utilizes a magnetic rail (!) to lower and raise its basket at the ideal intervals and temperatures, so that there’s literally no margin for error. While the One Touch includes presets for all tea types, you can also customize time and temperature to your liking.
I’ve extensively used almost every product Breville has released in the last decade, and while they’ve made winning strides into most kitchen appliance categories, their Tea Maker may just be their most perfect product, and my favorite.
The Best Toaster Oven is also an Air Fryer and Dehydrator
It was no surprise that once Breville entered the toaster oven game, nothing else was even worth considering. Not content to rest on that definitive win, Breville’s Smart Oven Air took things to the next level with air frying, dehydrating, and the capacity to accomodate a 14-pound turkey.
I’ve been using Breville Smart Ovens for more than five years, and upgraded to the flagship Air model back in early 2017. I found it to be a pretty perfect appliance, but I couldn’t have known at the time that it was going to save my cooking life. Long story short, New York City’s infrastructure is a joke: I haven’t had cooking gas for the past 8 months, and the Smart Oven Air has been my only oven.
As with most Breville appliances, the Smart Oven Air’s controls and aesthetics are far beyond anything else on the market. The long list of cooking presets— from roasting and toasting to cookies and pizza —is easy to navigate and intuitive, while super convection and an array of sensors ensure fast, even, exacting results. The Air can replace your oven, toaster (obviously), dehydrator, air fryer, your microwave (in most cases), and can even act as a slow cooker when paired with a Dutch oven.
As you can guess from the capacity, the Smart Oven Air is a large appliance, but you can expect similar performance in a range of sizes and price ranges from the entire Breville Smart Oven lineup.
4 Perfect, Analog Bodum Products that Aren’t French Presses
French presses will not make the best coffee, but Bodum does make the best French presses. Once upon a time they also made what many, including myself, argued was the best automatic coffee maker, and while they’ve been left behind in categories like that one, electric kettles, and coffee grinders, their glassware continues to shine.
Double Wall Cups
Bodum’s heat-retaining drinking vessels should be a staple in your beverage consumption, and have been in mine for more than five years. Available in a myriad of shapes, capacities, and with or without handles, there’s a Bodum for every bev.
Pour Over Coffee Maker with Permanent Filter
Here’s one of those better ways to make coffee. Bodum’s Pour Over Coffee Maker is available in multiple sizes and numerous colorways, but the one with the cork grip is the best one. It looks great on your counter, and includes a permanent filter.
Chambord Sugar and Creamer Set
It’s a copper and glass matching sugar and creamer set. It’s perfect.
Melior Vodka and Dry Martini Set
Moving from unnecessary luxury to totally unnecessary luxury, this glass and cork vodka decanter and vermouth atomizer will definitely impress the next time you whip up martinis.
Biolite's Smokeless FirePit Burns Wood and Charcoal
Between their consistent innovation and their dedication to positive social impact, you can’t not love Biolite. Their camping stoves, like the excellent CampStove 2, are best known for their magic trick of harnessing the energy from your fire to charge your devices, and perfectly suited for their intended occasions. Their FirePit is a far more universal product, fuel agnostic and ready for your campsite, backyard, truck bed, or balcony.
The BioLite FirePit weighs just under 20 pounds. The side-mounted 10,400 mAh battery pack aids in combustion and reduces smoke to almost zero with strategic oxygen circulation, and can go for a full 24 hours on the lowest setting. While the FirePit can’t turn its heat into additional juice for your iPhone Xs Max, it can recharge itself via solar using an optional but highly recommend cover.
With adjustable grill heights, adjustable fire intensity, and the ability to burn wood or charcoal with the space for 4 standard firewood logs, the FirePit lets you burn it your way. Best of all, both sides of the Pit are mesh, giving you an unobstructed view of your flames whether you’re cooking or just looking.
As someone with a balcony, a grill and/or fire pit’s viability as a balcony-based tool is always top of mind for me when testing something new. City laws around balcony grilling can be varied, vague, and generally unenforced, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to fire. Of all the open and/or wood-burning options I’ve tested, the BioLite FirePit created the least smoke and offered the most control over flame height, making it an ideal choice for balcony dwellers who want something beyond an electric grill.
While it would have been nice to have the Solar Carry Cover as a standard pack-in, the BioLite FirePit is my favorite of their products to date, and I’ve used all of them. More importantly, it’s the Biolite product that I and most regular people will get the most use out of by far, and the most enjoyment.
